RM of Great Bend’s story
The Rural Municipality of Great Bend No. 405 lies in west-central Saskatchewan, about 50 km northwest of Saskatoon. Its roots go back to the first years of the twentieth century, when three local improvement districts were set up: 20-E-3 in June 1905, 20-D-3 in August 1906, and 21-D-3 in November 1906.
On June 4, 1910, those three districts were amalgamated into Local Improvement District No. 405. The area was incorporated as the Rural Municipality of Great Bend No. 405 on December 12, 1910.
Among the people who once lived here was John Diefenbaker, later the 13th Prime Minister of Canada. He spent his childhood in the area from 1906 until 1910, when his family moved to Saskatoon.
Today the RM surrounds the town of Radisson and the village of Borden, where the municipal office is found, along with the locality of Great Deer. Most of the economic activity is agriculture, mainly grain farming and cattle ranching.
